VIVA, directed by Carol Woodward Ratzlaff, enters its 25th season with a total of seven choirs. The Amadeus Choir, Kathleen Allan, Artistic Director, just celebrated their 50th season.
The VIVA Chamber Singers (an SATB chamber choir) is comprised of experienced and highly-skilled singers who are young professionals, post-secondary students, and senior high school students.
VIVA was founded in 2000 by Carol Woodward Ratzlaff in response to widespread cuts to public school arts programs. As a lifelong vocal music educator, she believes that every person should have access to a singing experience. With this in mind, VIVA is committed to putting chorister voice at the forefront of their organization through the core values of choral performance artistry, choral creation and vocal music education, inclusive choral practices, choral leadership and mentoring, and community connections.
In the 2024/25 season, VIVA presents its twenty-fifth season with a total of seven choirs. These choirs continue to bring people of all ages, all abilities, and all levels of musical experience together through the power of choral music. They continue to push boundaries by applying current research in vocal pedagogy (including transgender voices, changing adolescent voices, supporting aging voices, etc.), vocal music education, inclusion studies, and academia to best meet the needs of their singers.

The Amadeus Choir of Greater Toronto is celebrating 50 years of enlivening the Toronto arts landscape through energetic performances, unexpected programming and artistic collaborations that redefine the boundaries of traditional choral music.
Led by Artistic Director Kathleen Allan, the Choir champions the best of choral music and premieres works of Canadian and international composers through a self-produced Toronto concert series, guest performances, and special events. The Amadeus Choir regularly commissions work from high-profile and emerging Canadian composers and recently established the Choral Creation Lab, a residency for composers and poets to co-create original works.

We acknowledge the generous support of the Friedrich Schiller Foundation for German-Canadian Culture
We also appreciate the generous contributions of hundreds of individual donors.

Where:

Details:
Doreen and I have been presenting eclectic recitals together for over 15 years.  I am a newly arrived soprano section lead at Fairlawn Church, where Doreen is a member of the congregation who frequently plays piano for special services.  We couldn't resist putting on a show to celebrate being together again!

The concert will feature a variety of
classic 19th and early 20th century folk songs, parlour songs and art songs, linked by the theme of Autumn.  Of particular note are the parlour songs: In the days before radio and television took over home entertainment, people would gather around the family piano.  These are the songs they used to sing.  Doreen is fond of them because she used to accompany her mother, who sang them.  I grew up listening to these old treasures in my parents' vintage record collection, and so developed my own fondness for these songs and an ear for how they were performed.  You can read my blog about it here.

My father, Paul, may be making a guest appearance with his gramophone and some select vintage records.

As a former section lead of the Toronto Chamber Choir, I will be performing in a soloists' octet as well as singing with the full choir.

This special performance celebrates the TCC’s golden anniversary by gathering together the choir’s extended “family,” including former choir members, directors, section leads, and other friends. The choir will sing some all-time favourite works by Bach, Purcell, Monteverdi, Schütz, Willan, and others, as well as the premiere of David Barber’s Gaudeamus.

“Life is painful and impossible and breathtaking and beautiful. I have to write what I feel.”
That’s where Victoria’s third album, Indigo, comes from. “These songs aren’t written to fit a genre, or to meet an expectation of a sound,” she says. “They’re built from bare-bones midnight recording sessions in my attic. They’re things that I need to say. And these are the songs that people ask for at my shows, so they’re things that people need to hear too.”
